In Las Vegas, the hard IRS deadline for claiming a car donation on this year’s taxes is simple: your vehicle must be picked up by December 31. With Desert Drive, benefiting Heritage for the Blind, that means you should call or submit our 2-minute form by December 27 to comfortably guarantee a December 31 pickup slot in most parts of the Las Vegas Valley. We schedule Monday through Saturday, all year—including Christmas week—with same-day or next-business-day pickup in most metro areas for calls made before early afternoon.
We’re local to the Las Vegas Valley and pick up in Summerlin, Henderson, North Las Vegas, Spring Valley, Enterprise, Paradise, Sunrise Manor and beyond. Your car does not need to run, and you don’t need to fix or smog it. Just have a signed Nevada title ready, and our towing partner will handle the rest—free of charge. Once your vehicle sells, Heritage for the Blind will mail you a tax receipt you can use when you file. If you’re looking at the calendar wondering how close you can cut it, the safest move is to lock in your pickup today so your donation counts for this tax year.

Donation is locked in for this tax year
On successful pickup by Dec 31Once the vehicle is successfully picked up on or before December 31, your donation counts for that tax year. Heritage for the Blind will process the vehicle sale and issue your tax receipt, even if the sale happens after New Year’s. The key is that pickup is completed by December 31.
Receive your IRS-ready tax receipt
Within weeks after saleAfter your vehicle is sold, Heritage for the Blind mails you a written acknowledgment. For donations over certain amounts, you may receive IRS Form 1098-C. Keep this with your tax records and use it when itemizing deductions with your tax professional or on your tax software.
Year-end tax deduction facts
December 31 controls which tax year you claim
For car donations, the IRS looks at when you irrevocably donate the vehicle—practically, that’s the pickup date. If your car is towed away on or before December 31, you can generally deduct it on that calendar year’s tax return.
Your deduction is usually the sale price
In most cases, the IRS allows you to deduct the actual gross sale price of the vehicle, not a blue-book estimate. Heritage for the Blind will sell your donated car and include the sale amount on the written acknowledgment or Form 1098-C you receive.
Form 1098-C for larger donations
When a vehicle donation exceeds IRS thresholds, Heritage for the Blind issues Form 1098-C. This form shows the sale price and certifies the charitable use. You’ll use that information when completing your federal return and any state return that allows charitable deductions.
You must itemize on Schedule A
To benefit from a car donation tax deduction, you generally need to itemize deductions on Schedule A instead of taking the standard deduction. Talk with a tax professional or check your tax software to see whether itemizing makes sense for your situation.
Written receipt usually comes within 30 days of sale
After your vehicle is sold, Heritage for the Blind sends a written acknowledgment, typically within 30 days of the sale. You don’t need the receipt in hand by December 31, but you do need pickup completed by then for the donation to count for that year.
